Finding Your Work-Life Balance

When I think of the term work-life balance, I immediately imagine a seesaw or two scales going back and forth. While I know I am not alone in this imagery, let’s began with defining work-life balance and then take a look at the balancing act.

Work-life balance is a term coined that involves looking at how working people manage their time between time spent at and outside of work. The time outside of work often includes managing our relationships, family responsibilities, and outside interests and hobbies. The ideal work-life balance is often debated and varies from person to person.

A greater focus on finding the work-life balance has come about due to the increased amount of technology that has removed many boundaries of physical location between home and work life. When many of our parents were in the workplace, it was difficult, if not next to impossible, to bring any significant amounts of work home. Now, it is more of the norm.

With the blurred lines between the two, it is increasingly important that we address this concern as failing to do so brings about significant concerns. While employers may bear some of the responsibility, ultimately, we have to take control of our own work-life balance.

When defining your work-life balance, you should keep in mind that it is difficult. You will need to identify and prioritize what’s truly important. In essence, you need to be in control. Knowing what the ideal work-life balance looks like for you will be equally important. However, taking the time to find your work-life balance allows you to be present in the moment, make a positive impact, and identify boundaries that work for you.
