Self-care Strategies for the Holidays

As the end-of-the-year holiday season approaches, it is a cause for great anxiety for many. It’s filled with much hustle and bustle, and while many are excited to see family and friends, it can also be a very stressful time. Some seek perfection, which is stressful, while others are busy making plans. Emotions run the gambit from sadness to extreme excitement and hope. Whether indulging in a staycation or traveling, many are so consumed with taking care of others that little time is spent on taking care of oneself. Here are a few ways to practice self-care during the holiday season.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

Even in happy moments, there is stress. When emotions are high, take a moment to acknowledge what you’re feeling and take a pause to regroup. We are often our own worse enemy in the sense that we think we must always be on the move.

Practice Gratitude

Practice gratitude and appreciation for the good things in your life. Be intentional in paying attention to the good things and expressing gratitude, even to yourself.

Schedule Time for Self-care Activities

It is often necessary to schedule time for ourselves in our busy lives. The length of the scheduled time varies and can range from a few minutes to a longer period of time. The self-care activity you practice can take many forms. Some relax to music, while it is meditating, deep breathing exercises, or journaling for others. Whatever activity works for your self-care should be practiced.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Engage in activities that keep your heart healthy. Ensure that you are eating nutritious meals and getting adequate sleep. Yes, you can have those holiday treats, but learn how to balance those treats with healthy foods.

So, as we kick-off, the holiday season, enjoy the holidays and take care of yourself!
